All Ears Dog Training Origin Story

The Journey That Shaped All Ears Dog Training (All Ears Dog Training Origin Story)

My path to becoming a dog trainer wasn’t a simple or straightforward one—it was born from deep personal struggle, heartbreak, and an intense drive to find better solutions. It all started with my first dog, Nala. When I brought her into my life, I had no idea the challenges we would face. Nala wasn’t just a dog; she was a companion, my confidante. But that bond was tested early on when, as a young dog, Nala tried to attack another dog. It was traumatic—not just for her, but for me too. The emotions of fear, guilt, and confusion set in immediately. I had no idea how to help her or what I had done wrong as a dog owner. I felt helpless.

In search of help, I turned to what I thought were the best trainers in Wellington, hoping they could guide us toward a solution. However, the methods they used were harsh and punishment-based. They were confident in their approach, but soon it became clear that their tactics weren’t working for Nala. In fact, they made things worse. Nala became even more reactive, fearful, and distrustful, and I was left feeling even more broken and confused. The emotional fallout was immense. I was constantly second-guessing myself as a dog owner, questioning whether I would ever be able to fix this. The process was exhausting and demoralizing.

But I refused to give up on Nala. I knew there had to be a better way. I began to explore alternative methods, focusing on positive reinforcement, where the emphasis was on rewarding the behaviors I wanted to see rather than punishing the ones I didn’t. This new approach took time, patience, and plenty of trial and error, but slowly, I began to see Nala’s transformation. It wasn’t a quick fix, but over time, I witnessed incredible improvements in her behavior—and in our relationship. It was through this process that I realized my true calling: not just to train dogs, but to help other people who were facing the same struggles I had with their reactive dogs.

From Struggles to Expertise: My Certification and Commitment to Positive Reinforcement

The personal journey with Nala was the catalyst for All Ears Dog Training, but it was only the beginning of my evolution as a trainer. I wanted to be more than just a pet owner trying to figure things out on my own—I wanted to be a true expert in the field. So, I dove headfirst into dog training education. I became certified through Absolute Dogs, a leading program known for its science-based, positive reinforcement methods. Today, I proudly consider myself an “Absolute Dogs Pro Dog Trainer Geek”—and I wear that title with pride.

What sets me apart from many trainers is not only my certification but my deep, lived understanding of the emotional challenges that come with training reactive dogs. I've walked the difficult path, and now I can offer guidance and solutions that are grounded in real-world experience and proven training methods. This certification has provided me with an even deeper toolbox of techniques, backed by the latest science and behavioral studies, ensuring that the methods I use are not only effective but also kind, compassionate, and ethical.

The Emotional Foundation of My Training Approach

The emotions I’ve felt through my journey—fear, frustration, guilt, and hope—have shaped the way I approach training. Having lived through the challenges of managing a reactive dog, I understand the stress and emotional toll it can take on a person. The constant worry of “will my dog ever improve?” or “am I doing the right thing?” is real, and it can feel overwhelming. But those emotions have made me more empathetic and driven to create a training program that not only transforms dogs but supports their owners through every step of the process.

The core of my training approach is positive reinforcement. I firmly believe in rewarding the behaviors we want to encourage, rather than punishing the ones we don’t. It’s about creating an environment where both dogs and owners can succeed—where learning becomes a joyful and rewarding experience for everyone. This method has allowed me to work with dogs who are fearful, anxious, or aggressive, and turn their behaviors around by building trust, confidence, and a deeper bond between owner and dog.

Meet the All Ears Family: Nala, Meeko, and Rio

At All Ears Dog Training, it’s not just about me—it’s about the family I’ve built around me, including my dogs, who have played a significant role in shaping the training I offer today. Nala, my first dog and the reason I began this journey, remains an essential part of everything I do. Then there’s Meeko, our farm-bred blue heeler-border collie mix, whose energy and drive remind me of the importance of patience and consistency in training. And last but certainly not least, Rio, the world’s smallest German Shepherd, whose sweet nature and eagerness to learn constantly inspire me.

Together, we are a team—each one of us contributing to the lessons I’ve learned, the strategies I’ve developed, and the support I now offer to other dog owners who are struggling with their own reactive dogs.

A Commitment to Helping You and Your Dog

With 15 years of experience as a coach in various fields, I’ve learned the importance of effective communication, empathy, and understanding. These skills have been invaluable in my work as a dog trainer. I don’t just train dogs—I work with their owners to ensure that they understand the “why” behind every technique, the emotional journey involved, and how to implement the training in a way that makes sense for their unique situation.

All Ears Dog Training isn’t just a business; it’s my mission. I want to help you and your dog overcome the challenges you’re facing, just as I’ve overcome them with Nala. I’m here to show you that no matter how tough the road may seem, with the right tools, approach, and support, you and your dog can thrive together. Whether you’re dealing with a puppy who shows signs of reactivity or a more mature dog with deeply ingrained behaviors, I’ve been there—and I’m here to help.
